GL Chart of Accounts
Company Tracker action: implementation-setup-gl-chart-of-accounts
Milestone: General Ledger / Module Setup (milestone_id=3, core_milestone_id=2)
Order: 5
Estimated duration: 2 hours
Typical owner: Controller
Purpose
Build Part 1 naturals (types, D/C, subledgers), then use Copier to create Part 2/3+ instances (dept/branch/location). Copier is folded into this Tracker action (not a separate card).
Prerequisites
- Code Format Design decisions agreed.
- GL Account Parts defined (Part 1 required; other parts/instances as designed).
- Company exists; HQ Company Setup done.
- Prefer import/create Part 1 naturals (and often first Part 2 structure) before bulk Copier.
Vista configuration article
See the detailed Vista guides:
Setting Up the GL Chart of Accounts
Using the GL Chart of Accounts Copier
Field meanings (Description, Notes, D/C, account types including Header/Memo, subledger letters, WIP hard rule, Copier pattern) live there. Do not restate them on this page.
Implementation guidance
- Build Part 1 naturals first (type, normal balance, subledger). Do not start Copier until the base chart is correct.
- Use Copier as the load strategy to create Part 2/3+ GLs from the base chart after Part 1 (and typically the first Part 2 template) exists. See the Vista Copier article for the recommended Part 2 pattern.
- Copier limitation: Copier does not copy custom fields. When custom fields must copy, prefer TAD instead of Copier alone.
- Vista field rules (account types including Header/Memo, WIP blank subledger, natural ranges, and related) live on the Vista Chart of Accounts article. Do not restate them here.
Done when
- Part 1 naturals exist and match the Vista field rules (type, D/C, subledger).
- Part 2/3+ accounts created via Copier (or TAD if custom fields) as needed.
- Custom-field case handled with TAD when applicable.
