HQ Material Categories
Company Tracker action: implementation-setup-hq-material-categories
Milestone: Headquarters / Module Setup (core_milestone_id=2)
Order: 12
Estimated duration: 0.25 hours
Typical owner: Controller
Purpose
Define material categories to group materials for reporting and organization. Categories are shared among companies that use the same Material Codes group. They are not Inventory-only: categories also support PO, reference, and unit-cost use without Inventory stocking.
Prerequisites
- Material Codes group assigned on HQ Company Setup Additional Info (categories shared only among companies on that group).
- Grouping approach decided (commodity, part family, etc.) before creating many categories.
- Know which categories will include non-stocked materials (those need Non-Stocked GL Account; stocked-only categories do not). Do not invent COA lists here.

Implementation guidance
- Categories are group-controlled via the Material Codes group, not all-company.
- Decide grouping approach before creating many records. Duplicate or inconsistent categories weaken materials and inventory reports.
- Non-Stocked GL Account: set only when the category will include materials not tracked in Inventory. That account drives AP expense and JC-EM posting for those non-stocked materials. Do not assign it for typical stocked-only categories.
- Next consumer: assign materials to categories on HQ Materials.
Done when
- Agreed material categories exist in the Material Codes group with clear names/descriptions.
- Non-Stocked GL Account set only where the category will include materials not tracked in Inventory.
