Setting up TEDI Monitors

The TEDI Monitors library is a set of templates. Each watch you create is an instance. Schedule the same skill many times with different parameters (companies, lookback, SQL, and so on). Timing lives on the instance.

On Desk, Add → Automations → Monitors creates a new instance and pins it. There is no Schedule card under Add.

Before you start

  • Initial setup is done: license active and the TEDI Windows Service is Running.
  • You know which companies and thresholds this watch should use.
  • For email or Teams delivery, Microsoft 365 or an SMTP profile is already configured in TEDI Settings.

Templates and instances

  • A template is the monitor skill in the library (for example a vendor-change check or custom SQL).
  • An instance is one configured watch of that skill: name, parameters, timing, and delivery.
  • New on a template creates another instance. It does not overwrite an existing one.

Expected outcome: One skill can have several instances with different companies or cadences.

Create an instance from TEDI Monitors

  1. In the TEDI left sidebar, select Monitors.
  2. Optionally filter with Search or switch card / list layout.
  3. Open a template.
  4. Select New to start another instance of that monitor.
  5. Set the instance name and parameters.
  6. Open Timing and add at least one rule before you enable the instance.
  7. Set Delivery if this instance should email or post to Teams.
  8. Select Create for a new instance, or Activate / Save on an existing instance.

Expected outcome: The instance appears under that template. Findings from runs show on the instance Digests tab and in Inbox.

TEDI Monitors library of templates

Use New custom monitor on the library when the watch is user-authored read-only SQL.

Add a monitor instance on Desk

  1. On Desk, select Add.
  2. Select Automations.
  3. Select Monitors.
  4. Select one or more templates.
  5. Select Add selected.

Expected outcome: Desk creates a new instance for each selection (disabled) and pins it on the workspace rail.

Desk Add Monitors list with Add selected

Open the rail item. Parameters, timing, and delivery belong to that instance. Select templates again later to pin another instance of the same skill with different parameters.

See Add to a TUDS Desktop workspace.

Timing on the instance

  1. Open the instance (TEDI Monitors detail, or the Desk rail pin).
  2. Open the Timing tab.
  3. Select Add Rule.
  4. Set rule type and fields the same way as a playbook schedule.
  5. Enable the instance only after at least one rule exists, then save.

Expected outcome: The monitor runs when any enabled rule is due (checked on each heartbeat).

Empty rules are allowed only while the instance is disabled. Enable requires at least one rule.

Some monitors run on every heartbeat while enabled and do not use timing rules. The Timing tab states that on those instances.

Delivery and findings

  • Delivery on the instance controls optional email or Teams when a digest needs attention.
  • Review findings on the instance Digests tab and in TEDI Inbox.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the library as one watch — The library is templates. Each pin or New is a separate instance.
  • Looking for a Schedule rail on Desk — Timing is on the instance. Add → Automations is Activity, Playbooks, and Monitors.
  • Enabling with no rules — Enable requires at least one timing rule (except heartbeat-only monitors).
  • Editing one instance expecting all copies to change — Parameters and timing are per instance.

Next steps

  • Scheduling TEDI Automations — Playbook timing on Desk vs TEDI Schedules.
  • Running a TEDI Automation — Queue a playbook from Desk or the Automations library.
  • Monitoring and Troubleshooting TEDI — Service health and logs.
