Obtain a Gemini API Key for TEDI
Use this guide to create a Gemini API key from Google AI Studio, then paste it into TEDI under Settings > Assistant > Providers. Google UI labels can change; use the official AI Studio docs if a menu name differs.
Before you begin
- A Google account with permission to create an AI Studio / Gemini API key for your company.
- TEDI installed on the machine where you will paste the key.
- Optional: Google Cloud billing if you will exceed free-tier limits or need production quotas.
Step 1: Open Google AI Studio
- Go to https://aistudio.google.com.
- Sign in with your Google account.
- Accept any Gemini API / AI Studio terms if prompted.
Step 2: Open API keys
- In AI Studio, open Get API key / API keys (sidebar or dashboard), or go to https://aistudio.google.com/api-keys.
- If Google already created a default key for a new account, you can copy that key. Otherwise continue to create one.
Step 3: Create an API key
- Select Create API key.
- Choose Create API key in a new project (simplest for first use) or pick an existing Google Cloud project your IT team wants to bill.
- Confirm creation and copy the key value.
Prefer keys that are restricted to the Gemini / Generative Language API when AI Studio offers a restrict option. Follow Google’s current guidance if your project shows unrestricted keys.
Step 4: Store the key safely
- Copy the key into your password manager before leaving the page.
- Do not email the key or paste it into tickets or shared chat.
- If the key may have been exposed, delete or rotate it in AI Studio / Google Cloud and create a new one.
Step 5: Paste the key into TEDI
- Open TEDI and go to Settings > Assistant > Providers.
- Under Add provider, choose Gemini, then Add (skip if Gemini is already listed).
- Expand the Gemini card.
- Paste the key into API key.
- Enable at least one model, set Default model for this provider, then Save.
- In Active selection, set Active provider to Gemini and choose an Active model.
TEDI uses the OpenAI-compatible Gemini endpoint https://generativelanguage.googleapis.com/v1beta/openai/. You normally do not change it.

Security checklist
- Keep the key on the TEDI host and in a password manager only.
- Do not commit the key to source control or shared docs.
- Rotate the key if it may have leaked.
