Obtain a Grok (xAI) API Key for TEDI

Use this guide to create a Grok API key from the xAI Console, then paste it into TEDI under Models → Providers. Console labels can change; use the official xAI Console if a menu name differs.

Before you begin

  • Access to an xAI Console account (or permission to create one for your company).
  • Billing or credits set up in the xAI Console when required for API usage.
  • TEDI installed on the machine where you will paste the key.

Note: The xAI API at console.x.ai is separate from consumer Grok chat on X / grok.com. TEDI needs a developer API key from the Console.

Step 1: Open the xAI Console

  1. Go to https://console.x.ai.
  2. Sign in or create an account.

Step 2: Confirm billing / credits (when prompted)

  1. In the Console, open billing or credits for your team.
  2. Add a payment method or accept promotional credits if offered.
  3. Optionally set usage limits your finance team expects.

Step 3: Create an API key

  1. Open API Keys in the Console sidebar (or your team’s API keys page under console.x.ai).
  2. Select Create API Key (wording may vary slightly).
  3. Give the key a clear name (for example, TEDI-Vista-PC).
  4. Grant the key access to the endpoints and models you need. If the Console offers wildcards / “all models” for a first TEDI key, that is usually the simplest start; tighten later if your security policy requires it.
  5. Create the key.

xAI API keys commonly start with xai-.

Step 4: Copy the key immediately

  • The Console typically shows the full secret once. Copy it before closing the dialog.
  • Store a backup in your password manager if you need to re-enter it later.
  • If you lose the value, revoke the old key and create a new one.

Step 5: Paste the key into TEDI

  1. Open TEDI → Models → Providers.
  2. Under Add provider, choose Grok, then Add (skip if Grok is already listed).
  3. Expand the Grok card.
  4. Paste the key into API key.
  5. Enable at least one model, set Default model for this provider, then Save.
  6. In Active selection, set Active provider to Grok and choose an Active model.

TEDI uses the default Grok endpoint https://api.x.ai/v1. You normally do not change it.

Security checklist

  • Do not email the key or paste it into a support ticket.
  • Do not commit the key to source control or shared docs.
  • If the key may have been exposed, revoke it in the xAI Console and create a replacement.
