Changing the Server Name

VA Change Server Name changes the Vista (Viewpoint) server name used for report and PM Word document locations. It does not rename SQL Server.

Trimble form: VA Change Server Name Form (Administration → Viewpoint Administration → Setup and Maintenance → Maintenance).

Before you start​

  • No formal prerequisites. The form already shows the current server name.
  • Know the new host name only (not the full UNC share path).
  • Common use after pointing a refreshed test/dev database at a different file server so templates and report paths do not stay on production.

Steps​

  1. Open VA Change Server Name.
  2. Review Current Viewpoint Server (display of the existing Viewpoint server name). Field definitions document only New Viewpoint Server.
  3. Enter New Viewpoint Server — only the portion before the Viewpoint share. Example: if the new path is \\NewServer\\Viewpoint\\Reports, enter NewServer.
  4. Click OK to update report and PM Word document locations.
  5. Reconfigure all clients toward the new server.

Hard rules​

  • Enter the server host only, not \\Server\\Viewpoint\\....
  • If the system stores attachments by file location, changing the server name can make attachments unavailable. Check paths in DM Attachment Options and update the server name if needed. Confirm the subdirectory structure still fits the new server; if not, change the path or restructure folders.
