Configuring JB T&M Labor Categories
JB T&M Labor Categories sets up labor categories for Time & Material billings. Categories group payroll detail by craft and class and control how labor prints on invoices. They are required if you bill labor rates instead of actual costs.
Set categories here before entering rates on JB T&M Template Labor Rates (that form lists all templates and all labor categories). Templates reference categories on labor sequences in JB T&M Template Setup.
Before you start
- Crafts and classes exist in Payroll (PR Crafts / PR Craft Classes).
- You know which craft/class combinations should bill together under each category.
Steps
- Open JB T&M Labor Categories.
- Enter Labor Category (up to 10 characters) and Description (up to 30).
- On the Assignments tab, define which payroll detail belongs in the category using craft/class restrictions:
- Restrict by Craft + Craft (from PR Crafts): only detail posted to that craft is included when this category is on a template sequence.
- Restrict by Class + Class (from PR Craft Classes): only that class (for the crafts in scope) is included.
- Unchecked Restrict by Craft = all crafts; unchecked Restrict by Class = all classes (cursor skips the Class column; Class stays blank).
- Save. Repeat for each category.
Restriction order at bill init
When billing initializes, JC detail is selected in this order:
- Both craft and class (both restrict boxes checked, both codes entered)
- Craft only (Restrict by Craft on, Restrict by Class off, Craft filled)
- Class only (Restrict by Craft off, Restrict by Class on, Class filled)
- All crafts and classes (both unchecked)
Leaving both unchecked is not recommended when you use multiple billing rates.

How templates use categories
On JB T&M Template Labor Rates (from JB Programs, or double-click a row on the Labor Rates tab in Template Setup):
- Optionally restrict by Earn Type, Factor, and/or Shift (blank = all).
- Rate Option: C-Actual Costs (JC actual costs), R-Labor Rate (rate on the labor category), or F-Earnings Factor (JC earnings factor × the category’s rate).
- Enter New Rate. File > Move New Rates to Old copies New into Old; New is not cleared and must be updated by hand.
- New rate applies from New Labor Rate Effective Date on JB T&M Template Setup (not on this category form).
Finer employee-level overrides use JB T&M Template Labor Override.
Notes
- Help does not mark fields as Required; category and description are still the identity of the record.
