Creating and Managing VA Menu Templates

VA Menu Templates creates and manages folder templates users apply when adding subfolders (for example under My Tasks / the Main Menu Folders pane). Example: a PM folder of change-order forms in process order. Standard templates ship with the system; custom template numbers start at 10,000.

Trimble renamed the how-to to Create and Manage Folder Templates (link text sometimes still says “Creating and Managing Folder Templates”). Form: VA Menu Templates Form.

Before you start

  • No formal security/license prerequisite on the create page.
  • Know which forms and reports belong in each template, and which module root folder users will add the subfolder under.

Create a template

  1. Open VA Menu Templates.
  2. Enter Folder Template # — N, New, or + for the next number. Custom numbers start at 10,000.
  3. Enter Folder Title (max 30 characters).
  4. Enter Module (F4) — module the template relates to.
  5. Check Active so the template is available when users add subfolders. Leave unchecked to keep it unavailable.
  6. On the Menu Items tab, add items (below), then save.

Add menu items

  1. Template must already exist.
  2. Item Type: F-Form or R-Report only (no folders, inquiries, or work centers on this form).
  3. Item: form name or report ID (F4 list depends on Item Type). Title fills automatically (Title is not in the field-definitions list).
  4. Menu Seq: display order. Tip: use 10, 20, 30 so you can insert without renumbering.
  5. Save.

Hard rules

  • Custom vs standard: custom templates begin at 10,000.
  • Active + Module make the template selectable when a user adds a subfolder to that module’s root folder on the Main Menu Menu tab / Folders pane.
  • Form overview also says users apply templates to their “application windows”; the create procedure focuses on My Tasks / Folders pane subfolders. Both descriptions appear in Trimble help.
  • Copy/subfolder methods are separate topics (Copy Folder Templates, Create Templates Based on Subfolders, Create Subfolders with Templates, Copy Subfolders), not steps on the create page.
