Managing PM Template Phases

PM Template Phases builds templates of phases and cost types that are common for a project type (for example OFFICE, HOUSING, STREET). After setup, roll the template into a project with PM Copy Template, then tailor phases and cost types in PM Project Phases.

Help lives under Projects and Contracts → Projects (not Setup/Maintenance). There is no numbered create procedure on the form; the linked “About Adding Template Phases to a Project” topic 404s in Trimble Help.

Before you start

  • Phases exist in JC Phases (field defs may say JC Phases Maintenance).
  • Cost types on a template phase must already be defined for that phase in JC Phases.
  • Standard item codes come from JC Std Item Codes.
  • Destination project already exists in PM Projects before you use PM Copy Template.

Steps — create or maintain a template

  1. Open PM Template Phases.
  2. Enter Template (up to 10 characters — unique name for the project type) and Description (up to 30).
  3. On Info and/or Grid, add each typical Phase (enter or F4). Phase Description defaults from JC Phases (editable, up to 30).
  4. Optionally enter Contract Item (up to 16 digits) and/or Std Item Code. On roll-in, the phase links to that contract item; if the item is missing on the destination contract, roll-in creates it (description from the phase; if several phases share the item, the first phase’s description wins).
  5. On Cost Types, cost types from JC Phases for that phase are added automatically. Delete extras, or re-add a deleted one by typing its cost-type number.
  6. Save. Repeat for other templates.

Estimates are not on the template. Estimated units, hours, dollars, and contract amounts are set later in PM Project Phases and PM Contract Items.

Steps — apply to a project (PM Copy Template)

  1. Open PM Copy Template.
  2. Select the template and an existing PM project.
  3. Copy / roll in. First copy sets up data in PM Projects and PM Contracts. Additional templates can be rolled into the same project — new phases and contract items are added; duplicate phases are skipped (same phase on multiple templates appears once).
  4. Tailor phases, cost types, and estimates in PM Project Phases (and contract amounts in PM Contract Items).

Contract-item fallback on roll-in

  • No contract item, but a standard item code → standard item code becomes the contract item (description from the std item).
  • Neither contract item nor standard item code → phase is assigned to contract item #1.
