Setting Up SM Cost Types

SM Cost Types identifies categories of work that costs post to on work orders. After setup, assign them on work completed lines in SM Work Orders. Form intro examples say equipment, labor, miscellaneous, and materials; the category list is five values including Other and Subcontracts (not a separate “miscellaneous” code).

Before you start​

  • No formal prerequisites. Implied: JC cost types exist (JC Cost Types); job phase cost-type setup in JC Job Phases and/or JC Phases; labor codes may already carry a JC cost type.
  • There is no PR/payroll field on this form — labor JC fallback is via the labor code, not a PR code.

Steps​

  1. Open SM Cost Types (Programs → Service Management → SM Cost Types).
  2. Enter SM Cost Type (number 0–32,767).
  3. Enter Description (up to 60 characters).
  4. Select SM Cost Type Category:
    • L-Labor
    • E-Equipment
    • M-Material
    • O-Other
    • S-Subcontracts
  5. Enter JC Cost Type — default from JC Cost Types when this SM cost type is used on work completed lines for a job work order. Posts to Job Cost via JC Cost Detail with the phase on the work order sequence.
  6. Optionally check Taxable for Sales or Use. If category is M-Material, this enables Material Taxability.
  7. If Material + Taxable, set Material Taxability:
    • Blank — standard tax defaulting
    • S-Sales Tax Only
    • U-Use Tax Only (US companies only)
    • B-Both Sales and Use Tax
  8. Save. Assign cost types on work completed lines as needed.

Hard rules​

  • Unchecked Taxable does not stop tax if the material, site, or service center is taxable (procedure warning; not repeated in field defs).
  • Work completed line type must match cost-type category (Labor line → Labor category). Exception: Misc and Purchase lines can use any category.
  • Labor work completed lines use this JC cost type only if the labor code has no JC cost type.
  • Purchase work completed lines ignore this JC cost type and use the PO item’s JC Cost Type (edit via SM PO Purchase Order Entry or PO Purchase Order Entry).
  • Locked phases (JC Jobs “Phases on this job are locked”): cost type must exist on the sequence phase in JC Job Phases, or save is blocked.
  • Unlocked phases: cost type must exist in JC Job Phases or JC Phases for that phase, or save is blocked.
  • Material Taxability is hidden unless category is M-Material, and disabled until Taxable is selected.
