Using VA Datatype Label

VA Datatype Label changes labels (field descriptions) for fields tied to certain datatypes when Vista wording does not match company terms. Example: Phase Code → Cost Code. Trimble calls this “soft” or “dynamic” labeling. Form help title: About the VA Datatype Label Form. Procedures: Setting a Datatype Label and Deleting a Datatype Label. There is no help slug using-va-datatype-label.

Saving updates the label on all fields that use that datatype. Data values and table columns are unchanged. Only certain datatypes are supported, not every field. This form is under Setup and Maintenance → Maintenance; it is not Datatype Security under Application Security.

Before you start​

  • Agree on the terminology users should see.
  • No special setup, security, or version checklist is documented beyond access to the form.

Steps — set a label​

  1. Open VA Datatype Label.
  2. Datatype: enter the datatype, or F4 to look up / select defined datatypes.
  3. Label: enter the new label (setting page also says “new description”).
  4. Save.

Steps — clear a label​

  1. Select the text in Label.
  2. Press Backspace.
  3. Save.

Do not use a Delete command. Delete is removed from the toolbar and the Edit menu so datatypes are not accidentally deleted. Clearing the label is Backspace only.

Hard rules​

  • Change applies to every field on that datatype.
  • Form covers certain datatypes only.
  • Clear labels with Backspace, not Delete.
  • Distinct from Datatype Security (Data, Record, and Content Security).
